About Bahnschrift Font
Bahnschrift is a variable sans-serif font developed by Microsoft based on DIN 1451. Initially, it was a static font. When Google, Apple, Adobe, and Microsoft worked together to make variable fonts, Bahnschrift was the one that was chosen.
The transition from static to variable was made by Aaron Bell of Saja Typeworks. He completed rebuilding Bahnschrift as a variable font in 2016. He expanded the font’s weight and character set and added manual hinting.
Bahnschrift was Microsoft’s very first Open Type variable font. It first came with Windows 10 version 1709, and it’s mostly used for the Xbox software’s user interface.
The best thing about Bahnschrift is that it lets you change fonts along two axes: weight and width. The weight axis has five pre-set “instances,” and the width axis has three “instances.”
For programs that fully support variable fonts, Bahnschrift turns into a fun place to play with weight and width.
The characters are coded in such a way as to render sharply across a wide range of Windows devices and point sizes.
